Loneliness and Sibling Relationships

Authors: Ponzetti, J. J., Jr., and James, C. M.

Overview

The study investigated how sibling bonds affect loneliness during late adolescence. 251 college students were surveyed on loneliness and the qualities of closeness, rivalry, conflict, and power in their sibling relationships. Correlational analysis and regression determined the association between loneliness and these relationship qualities. Results showed a significant negative correlation between loneliness and both closeness and rivalry, while conflict was positively correlated. No significant relationship was found for power. Closeness emerged as a significant predictor of loneliness. The findings are interpreted within the framework of an adult model of sibling attachment.
