Publica’s submission to the Productivity Commission’s philanthropy inquiry.
It highlights that the vast amount of charitable work contributed by church volunteers in the community is often not taken into account when quantifying the contributions of the not-for-profit sector to community welfare.
It also speaks to the way churches fill in local councils’ gaps in service provision, frequently without any public funding.
It then turns to the history of Government recognition for the role which faith communities have fulfilled in the broader community, before discussing how and why changes to this understanding would be detrimental to communities across Australia.
